Every year instead of setting New Year resolutions, I choose three words to try and live my year by in the coming year.
For 2017 I chose listen, learn and live. My rationale was that I needed to listen more so I heard what was being said, and not said. The learning was my journey to be more and for live, I had decided I wanted a life beyond business.
Did they work? Well, yes and no. I did hone my listening skills, but I didn’t always like what I heard, especially when people were brave and honest with me about stuff that was happening. All of which contributed to my learning but the lessons were sometimes hard ones to take. As for getting a life, well here I really did succeed, with taking a long family vacation this summer and eking out more time for myself.
As we approach 2018, I have been reflecting on my words for next year. In case you haven’t noticed, I like alliteration, which adds to the challenge of selecting my words but it always seems to work out.
Drum roll please …
My words for 2018 are growth, gratitude and grounded – and in that order.
I selected growth – both on a personal and professional level. I want to see Company of Women grow and deepen its offerings. As for personal growth, I am studying and inhaling anything to do with leadership. If Company of Women is to expand and grow, it needs a confident, knowledgeable leader at its helm. And I am a work in progress.
So often we take for granted what we already have – family, friends, our home, and our health. I want to remind myself of all my blessings and express my gratitude to the people in my life; the people who support me and make me whole.
As for the grounded, I want to remember my roots and not get carried away with myself. I’m just a Scottish lassie who emigrated to Canada. I want to remember my British backbone and common sense attitude as that has stood me in good stead. And I always want to remember to give back.
So what words would you choose? Let me know.
