As a child, I remember my father talking about the importance of a sense of balance in life. He believed that when your stock was high, you helped someone else – thereby creating more balance in the world.

Having grown up in poverty, he was only too well aware of what it was like to go without and so when his fortunes changed, he went out of his way to give back. My father was known for his philosophy and generosity, and to this day, I have a special necklace that one of his friends made for me with the scales of justice on one side and the words sense of balance engraved on the back.

Family values are important. They give us our roots, and the rules by which we live. It should therefore come as no surprise that giving back has been an integral part of my life.

We live in a land of plenty, yet many go without. Kersti prods us to look at what we have, to be grateful for the small things in life that we often take for granted.

Pat takes us to the next level and asks us to look at how we can leave our legacy for generations to come. Through her Acts of Kindness Network, Deborah is a living example of how by reaching out, you can make a difference. It doesn’t have to cost a lot. One group of women I know donated $4 each towards the purchase a pig for a woman in Nigeria. Others have held potluck dinners for Afghan women through Breaking Bread for women.

There are many ways you can get involved. Whether it is through your business, workplace or your family – reach out and help someone else, by volunteering, donations or gifts in-kind.

Whatever you do – you’ll find that “all that you give into the lives of others, comes back into your own.”
