As families gather to celebrate Easter, many will be sitting down to enjoy a turkey, ham or leg of lamb.

But not everyone. I spent my morning helping out at Foods 4 Kids in Guelph stuffing bags so that children do not go hungry over the long weekend. Around 69 bags were pulled together so that instead of going home to an empty cupboard and no food, they will leave school on Thursday with some food to feed their tummies.

The food is delivered to the children through their schools, and is discreetly deposited into their backpacks.

While much of the food is pre-packaged, they do get some fresh fruit – an apple, an orange and a banana. It is hard to imagine children going hungry, so I was asking about what food was required, thinking of making a trip to Costco to help the charity stock up.

What do they need?

  • Chicken noodle soup
  • Tune (in wster)
  • Hummus with crackers
  • Fruit cups
  • Canned beans
  • Chunky beef soup
  • Kraft dinner
  • Apple sauce cups
  • Chicken with crackers
  • Oatmeal – single serving packs
  • Pasta with meatballs

I also learnt that it costs $500 to provide food for a child for a year.

Food4Kids provides food to children whose families are struggling to make ends meet. Started in Hamilton, there are different programs run in Halton, Kitchener-Waterloo and now Guelph. The Guelph program, soon to be a registered charity, is a project of the four Rotary Clubs in Guelph.
