Has it been cold enough for you? I confess I almost hibernate when it is like this. Staying indoors, warm and cosy with steaming cups of soup and coffee.
Only problem is that at the farm we are heated through geothermal which sounds very environmentally friendly, but when it is cold and the ground is cold, the heat we receive is sluggish to say the best.
So on Monday, my husband prepared a fire and issued the challenge to me that he expected to see it still going strong when he came home that night.
The gauntlet thrown, I was determined that this fire would not go out. Every hour on the hour, I would go and check it. Give it a poke, add wood, or whatever else I could find to keep the embers burning.
It’s a bit like when someone tells you that your idea won’t work, and you think “just watch me.” And in our businesses, sometimes we need that prod, that challenge to make us even more determined to succeed.
And like my hourly check on the status of the fire, when we watch closely, we notice when extra strategies are needed and we get creative. There is also some truth in the expression “what gets measured matters.”
While we don’t want to surround ourselves with “negative nellies,” they do serve a useful role in terms of motivating us to prove them wrong. Just don’t hang out with them too long.
As for my fire … yes, it was still burning strong, and I hadn’t even had to go outside to collect more wood, I was frugal and managed with what I had.
Just like you can when under the gun to succeed. You go girl.
